The standards provided by the Codex Alimentarius Commission are also used by many countries as their national regulation. The Codex General Standard for Irradiated Foods and Recommended International Code of Practice for the Operation of Radiation Facilities Used for the Treatment of Foods requires the use of wording such as "irradiated", "treated by irradiation" etc. The use of the international symbol irradiation is optional. When an irradiated ingredient is used to make another food, it should be declared in the list of ingredients.

La norme générale Codex pour les aliments irradiés (CAC/RS 106-1979) a été adoptée par la Commission du Codex Alimentarius à sa treizième session (1979) et a été successivement révisée par la quinzième session de la Commission (1983). Cette norme a été soumise pour acceptation à tous les États Membres et membres associés de la FAO et de l'OMS, conformément aux Principes généraux du Codex Alimentarius.
