An imaging technique in which cross-sectional images acquired by computer tomography or magnetic resonance imaging are processed by computer to reconstruct a three-dimensional display similar to that seen through an endoscope.

En pratique, la technique consiste à déplacer un curseur [...] le long du canal étudié [...] Comme en rendu de volume, l'impression de relief des images obtenues est produite selon une technique d'éclairage et d'ombrage qui tient compte de l'éloignement des structures anatomiques par rapport à la position du curseur. Ce dernier étant considéré comme l'objectif de l'endoscope virtuel, il sert de référence à la reconstruction informatique des parois endoluminales sur 360°.
