La surdité hystérique peut être complète, absolue. Le plus souvent alors elle débute brusquement, persiste sans modifications notables pendant quelques jours ou quelques semaines, et guérit tout à coup sans laisser de traces. Mais cette forme de paralysie absolue de l'audition est fort rare. Dans la grande majorité des cas, la surdité hystérique est incomplète. Elle n'existe que d'un côté, et, même du côté atteint, l'ouïe est simplement affaiblie.
