Selon leur nouveau mandat, les services correctionnels fédéraux sont chargés de l'application de la peine infligée par le tribunal et doivent contribuer à la réadaptation des délinquants dans la collectivité. Dès lors, le terme pénitentiaire, c'est-à-dire qui a rapport aux détenus, aux pénitenciers devenait trop limitatif et a été remplacé par correctionnel.
