La biologie du froid ou cryobiologie consiste essentiellement en un ralentissement des activités physico-chimiques des cellules, proportionnel à l'abaissement de la température. Dans certaines conditions et pour de très basses températures, ce ralentissement peut se poursuivre jusqu'à l'arrêt total de toutes manifestations vitales. On observe alors un état de non-vie, dit de «vie suspendue», état différent de la mort, car réversible. Pendant cette phase il ne se produit pas la moindre détérioration des structures cellulaires. Aucune usure ni aucun vieillissement ne sont théoriquement observés. Un réchauffement bien conduit permettra un retour à l'état initial.
