Originally, portable data capture devices recorded data on punched cards and, sometimes, paper tapes. Present-day devices, however, consist of either tape cassette recorders incorporating a rechargeable battery pack, or magnetic bubble storage which can record data into memory, and keyboards (mainly numeric, sometimes alphanumeric) for data entry, equipped with strip displays for data validation.

[On] the instrument panel of the modified GAT 2B simulator, the left side contains current instruments, while the central and right-hand areas are equipped with new digital displays. The two empty rectangles in the centre [of the GAT 2B flight simulator] are for the flat panel plasma display and the data entry keyboard.
