En 1995, la production en eau profonde restait encore marginale avec 1 Mb/j (million de barils par jour) de brut et 50 Mm³/j de gaz. Les Brésiliens ont été parmi les premiers à se lancer dans les grands fonds, et aujourd'hui, 66 % de leurs réserves sont en eaux profondes. Trois champs produisent un total de 250 000 b/j, et 800 000 b/j sont espérés en l'an 2000. Les autres gisements exploités ou en cours de développement, en offshore profond, sont essentiellement localisés dans le golfe du Mexique, dans le golfe de Guinée et en Mer du Nord.
