La généralisation des techniques numériques pour l'enregistrement ou la transmission des signaux d'information impose l'emploi d'un étage de transducteurs supplémentaires qui transforment les signaux analogiques en signaux numériques. En effet, aucun capteur de sons ou d'images et aucun système de reproduction audiovisuelle ne travaillent de manière directe en numérique. Il existe toujours pour l'instant, au départ et à l'arrivée d'un système de transmission, une étape traitée en analogique.
