Dilatancy theory has ... been used in earthquake prediction. B.A. Bolt (1988) has shown that, as crustal rocks crack under the tectonic strain which precedes an earthquake, changes in pore pressure within the rock cause a temporary reduction in the velocity of the P waves.

C'est essentiellement grâce à la formulation d'une théorie dite de la dilatence, théorie basée sur des observations faites en Union soviétique, que cette prévision a été rendue possible. Cette théorie concerne les ondes longitudinales, ondes séismiques associées à la contraction et la dilatation de la croûte terrestre avant que la surface ne reprenne sa forme initiale.
