La relation entre café et risque de maladies cardiovasculaires est connue, et paraît liée surtout aux effets hypercholestérolémiants des diterpènes cafestol et kahweol.

OBS

Présents chez certains insectes et chez divers organismes marins, ils sont surtout répandus chez les végétaux. Si certains sont universels (c'est le cas des gibberellines), d'autres ont une distribution plus restreinte. Particulièrement abondants chez les Lamiales et les Astérales -plus de 1 200 produits répartis en une centaine de squelettes ont été décrits chez les seules Asteraceae ! - ils sont plus dispersés chez les Gentianales, les Géraniales et les Fabales.
