In the Middle Danube Valley, around 3800 BC, the Linear Pottery culture evolved into the so-called Head-Note Pottery culture, and between 3500 and 3000 BC the same area was occupied by the Dotted Pottery culture, which expanded as fas as northeast France.

On distingue généralement trois phases [dans le courant danubien] : Danubien I, II et III [...] Le Danubien II ou «poinçonné» (en raison du décor céramique exécuté au poinçon), connaît de nombreuses variétés locales : Roessen, Hinkelstein, Lengyel, Michelsberg, Tisza, etc. Il se situe au IVe millénaire, et son influence est sensible en Europe occidentale. Les constructions, en bois, adoptent un plan trapézoïdal, et leur taille se réduit par rapport à celles de la phase précédente : la maison individuelle remplace peu à peu la demeure collective.
