DVD increases the capacity of optical discs from 650 megabytes on CDs to 4-7 gigabytes. By using double tracks on both sides of the disc, it is possible to squeeze as much information on to one disc as on 27 CDs.

Une autre génération de DVD est également prête à sortir des laboratoires. Leur particularité sera d'avoir deux étages d'informations sur chaque face. Pour passer de l'un à l'autre, on a dû rendre la couche supérieure semi-réfléchissante au rayon laser. Grâce à ce procédé, les capacités de stockage s'envolent. Un DVD double couche double face contiendra autant d'informations que 26 CD (17Go), l'équivalent de plus de 8 heures de film!
