L'accumulation de grandes épaisseurs de sédiments, dans des conditions de dépôt à faible profondeur, est l'illustration la plus apparente de la subsidence, en ce qu'elle suppose un affaissement lent, continu ou par saccades du fond du bassin. Le taux de subsidence peut alors se mesurer en considérant l'épaisseur des sédiments déposés en un temps donné, en supposant que l'apport sédimentaire compense exactement l'enfoncement du bassin. Néanmoins, la subsidence peut se produire en dehors de toute surcharge sédimentaire et avoir des causes tectoniques en rapport avec des phénomènes distensifs ou thermiques, comme c'est le cas pour la lithosphère océanique, qui se refroidit et qui s'enfonce par suite de son alourdissement.
