A small air-filled ionization chamber (about the size and shape of a cigar) that measures radiation dose by responding to ionization of the air contained in the chamber.

The two most commonly used types of dosimeters are direct reading dosimeters (DRD) and thermoluminescent dosimeters (TLD) .... The DRD allows you to periodically check the amount of radiation you are receiving at any given moment. A quartz fibre within the dosimeter measures the radiation by moving along a scale and provides an indication of your exposure.
