À Madagascar, la première description de FR [fièvre récurrente] à B. duttoni date de 1911. Une étude,faite en 1989, ne trouve plus aucune mention de la maladie : les ornithodores semblent avoir disparu de la Grande île.

La fièvre récurrente à tique (FRT) à réservoir humain (Borrelia duttoni) sévit en Afrique tropicale [...] Le vecteur, Ornithodoros moubata, vit dans le sol et les crevasses des huttes; durant la nuit, il se gorge sur les personnes dormant au ras du sol.
