En Californie du Sud, pendant le premier quart du XIXe siècle, on a pensé que les mouffettes tachetées (Spilogale putorius) transmettaient la rage à l'homme.

OBS

Parmi les quatre espèces de mouffettes tachetées (Spilogale), la mouffette tachetée orientale (Spilogale putorius) atteint presque la frontière canadienne entre le Minnesota et le Manitoba; toutefois, seule la mouffette tachetée occidentale (Spilogale gracilis) se rencontre au Canada. On a parfois vu quelques individus de cette espèce dans le Sud de la Colombie-Britannique, mais pas à plus de 120 km au nord de Vancouver.
