A U.S. [United States] statute, adopted in 1996, which provides criminal penalties for the theft of trade secrets. The EEA [Economic Espionage Act] makes it illegal to steal or fraudulently obtain trade secrets for the benefit of a foreign government, instrumentality, or agent and steal trade secrets that benefit "anyone other than the owner."
