In traditional karate, it is an offensive striking technique using the bent elbow, either in an upward, a downward, a sideway, or a circular motion.

Elbow strikes can be made to the front, back or sides -- rising, falling or turning to the side -- when movement of the torso is restricted, you are grasped from behind, or the opponent has grabbed your arm.

Deliver a side elbow smash to the jaw and then reverse it to the other side.
