L'action de l'engin de pêche à l'électricité repose sur le fait qu'un champ électrique s'installe dans l'eau entre la cathode et l'anode mobile (pôle de capture) si bien qu'un objet de conductibilité différente de l'eau produit dans ce champ une tension électrique. Si cet objet est un poisson, l'effet du champ électrique se traduira par des contractions musculaires ainsi que des réactions neurologiques. Dès lors[,] le poisson peut : a) fuir hors du champ électrique, b) demeurer sur place, c) nager vers l'anode, d) être étourdi ou perdre connaissance, e) mourir.
