Elle commémore l'indépendance du pays proclamée le 4 avril 1960. A part quelques défilés militaires, des fêtes d'école ou d'évènements organisés par les fonctionnaires, elle est très peu suivie des Sénégalais dont certains en profitent pour ironiser sur les maigres avancées socio-économiques que le pays a pu connaître en quarante années d'indépendance. Le jour est férié pour les administrations et les banques.
