[...] Pour comprendre ce qui se passe, comparons la balle à effet rotatif à la balle frappée à plat - vitesse de rotation très faible. [...] La trajectoire de la balle frappée à plat est basse et très longue. Généralement ce type de balle voyage à grande vitesse; la puissance domine alors. Toutefois, la trajectoire étant longue et plutôt basse, le risque d'envoyer la balle en dehors du court ou encore d'accrocher le filet est très élevé. La balle frappée à plat est rapide mais sans mordant; elle subit «passivement» la résistance de l'air, ce qui explique sa trajectoire quasi horizontale.
