Le taux de prime est soit minimum ou fixe (flat or minimum rate), soit analytique, c'est-à-dire qu'il peut être analysé. Le premier est arbitraire et il donne lieu à l'application de règles très simples. Tout en présentant une certaine part d'arbitraire, le second est plus nuancé. Il donne lieu à l'application d'un taux de base (key rate), de majorations (charges) qui peuvent aussi prendre le nom de surprime (extra-charges), de bonification, rabais ou réduction (deductions) tenant compte d'un risque réduit par rapport au risque-type ou normal, comme l'existence d'extincteurs chimiques, d'un gardien faisant des rondes régulières, de murs coupe-feu, etc.
