Le métal de la table de roulement est refoulé latéralement provoquant la formation de bavures. Le congé de raccordement de la face latérale du champignon et de la table de roulement du rail prend une forme de feston. On observe alors la formation d'une bavure pouvant se prolonger sur toute la longueur du rail, celle-ci tend à s'effiler et se détacher progressivement du champignon.
