The lightweight mixture of plastics, rubber, and upholstery left when a car is shredded for metal reclamation.

An automobile ... is often recycled when it reaches the end of its useful life. Flattened car hulks are fed to an automobile shredder, which is a hammer mill that tears the car apart to produce a uniformly sized supply of secondary metal about the size of baseballs. Approximately 3/4 of each car hulk is metal which is separated into ferrous and nonferrous components for recycling. The remaining 1/4 is residue consisting of plastics, glass, fabric, rubber, and paint among other items, commonly called "Automotive Shredder Residue (ASR)" or "fluff."

Environ 12 millions d'automobiles et de camions légers sont recyclés annuellement en Amérique du Nord et la plus grande partie des métaux ferreux et non ferreux qu'ils contiennent sont récupérés. Alors que le taux de recyclage des métaux atteint presque 95 %, les matériaux non métalliques, soit les plastiques, le caoutchouc, le verre et les tissus, se retrouvent sous la forme d'un sous-produit, communément appelé résidus de déchiquetage des automobiles (RDA) ou «fluff». Les RDA sont un mélange hétérogène constitué d'environ 50 % de matériaux combustibles et de 50 % d'éléments non combustibles. Puisqu'il n'est présentement pas rentable de séparer les RDA en leurs composantes, ils sont tous enfouis dans des dépotoirs.

résidus de carcasses d'automobiles : Cette expression, relevée dans le rapport annuel 1990-1991 du plan d'action du Centre Saint-Laurent d'Environnement Canada, est à notre avis mal formée. «Résidus» se dit des «matières qui subsistent après une opération physique ou chimique»; «résidus de déchiquetage» est une expression correcte mais pas «résidus de carcasses», une «carcasse» ne se rapportant pas à une «opération», à un procédé.
