eau: Employé au singulier, ce terme désigne généralement la substance, comme élément physique, et non une quantité de cette substance; c’est un terme non comptabilisable, le plus souvent précédé de l’article défini («l’eau»), ou de l’article indéfini, lorsqu’il est accompagné d’une qualification (p. ex. une eau claire, une eau trouble; une eau qui court; purification de l’eau [du robinet]). Une eau, pour «une quantité d’eau», n’est pas normal en français.
