The first successful Army test jump with a free-fall parachute was made by Mr. Leslie Irvin at McCook Field on April 28, 1919, using a chute designed by Floyd Smith and Guy Ball, both civilian employees at McCook.

La technique du parachute dût être orientée vers une solution nouvelle et donna finalement le jour au parachute à ouverture commandée, en service actuellement. Avec ce modèle de parachute, l'aviateur n'est plus relié à l'avion au moment de quitter l'appareil. Il passe par-dessus bord, se lance dans le vide et effectue une chute libre jusqu'à l'instant où, tirant sur une poignée placée devant son épaule gauche, il provoque l'ouverture du parachute.
