A crystal defect consisting of a vacancy and an interstitial which arise when an atom is plucked out of a normal lattice site and forced into an interstitial position.

Les collisions élastiques ont pour effet de chasser de nombreux atomes de leur site initial dans le réseau cristallin. Ces atomes se placent alors en insertion dans le réseau (on les appelle des interstitiels) et laissent de ce fait des sites vacants appelés lacunes. Il se forme ce que l'on appelle une paire de Frenkel. Pour que celle-ci soit stable (c'est-à-dire ne se recombine pas spontanément), l'interstitiel doit se trouver suffisamment loin de la lacune (typiquement à plus de 3 distances interatomiques).
