Graphite moulds, which are commonly used for zinc castings, were not previously used for aluminum because of the cost and casting defects. Because of improvements made to several casting parameters, including mould design, melt, and heat treatments, components with excellent mechanical properties were produced.

[Les] moules en graphite [...] sont utilisés couramment pour fabriquer des produits de zinc. On ne s'en servait pas auparavant pour l'aluminium parce que le coût était trop élevé et que les produits moulés présentaient des défauts. Il est maintenant possible de produire des composants offrant d'excellentes propriétés mécaniques grâce aux améliorations apportées à plusieurs paramètres de la coulée, notamment la conception du moule, le traitement du métal fondu et le traitement thermique.
