The assembly, consisting of the tenants in chief and the great ecclesiastics, which after the Conquest, represented the Anglo-Saxon Witenagemot. The House of Lords originated out of it. After the House of Lords had been constituted, the name was applied to occasional assemblies of the meeting peers otherwise than in Parliament.
