[Transmutation of elements] increases or lowers the atomic weight of certain atoms, which means that electrons and protons are added to or substracted from them. This is accomplished by soft particles which carry hard protons and electrons into the atom and deposit them there.

[La] proportion des protons de très haute énergie (protons durs, en jargon physicien) est supérieure à celle que l’on observe dans le rayonnement cosmique «courant» dans la Galaxie, lequel est vieux de plusieurs millions d’années. Or, au cours du temps, ce sont les photons les plus énergiques qui perdent le plus d’énergie. Dans leur jargon, les physiciens disent que le spectre devient de moins en moins dur. Un rayonnement cosmique jeune est plus «dur» qu’un rayonnement cosmique vieux.
