Hard rock chromite deposits are normally assigned to one of two classes on the basis of deposit geometry, petrological character, and tectonic setting. Stratiform deposits are sheet-like accumulations of chromite that occur in layered ultramafic to mafic igneous intrusions. Podiform deposits are irregular but fundamentally lenticular chromite-rich bodies that occur within Alpine peridotite or ophiolite complexes.

Deux sous-types de gîtes de chromite en roches dures sont en général reconnus d'après la géométrie des corps minéralisés, le caractère pétrologique des roches hôtes et le milieu tectonique dans lequel apparaissent les minéralisations. Les gîtes stratiformes sont des accumulations de chromite adoptant la forme de nappes qui se rencontrent dans des intrusions stratifiées de composition ultramafique à mafique. Les gîtes podiformes sont des amas riches en chromite, de forme irrégulière mais essentiellement lenticulaire, situés au sein de complexes ophiolitiques ou de péridotites de type alpin.
