Les monstres de Gila du sud-ouest des États-Unis et de l'ouest du Mexique sont les seuls lézards venimeux parmi les 3000 espèces de lézards. Ils appartiennent à la famille des Hélodermatidés qui existe depuis trente-cinq millions d'années. Il y en a deux espèces, Heloderma suspectum et le lézard perlé mexicain, Heloderma horridum.
