Les hydrobiotites sont, en fait, des mélanges de feuillets de mica biotite normaux intercalés par des feuillets de vermiculite; on retrouvera donc chez les hydrobiotites en partie, mais atténués, les caractères si particuliers des vermiculites. Macroscopiquement, ces espèces minérales ressemblent beaucoup aux micas noirs habituels [...] Ces minéraux sont activement recherchés; ils ont les mêmes emplois que les minéraux argileux du groupe des montmorillonites.
