(grade) A degree of inclination, or a rate of ascent or descent, with respect to the horizontal, of a road, railroad, embankment, conduit, or other engineering structure; it is expressed as a ratio (vertical to horizontal), a fraction (such as m/km or ft/mi), or a percentage (of horizontal distance).

DEF

(gradient) The degree of slope of a pipe invert or road or land surface. Often expressed as a ratio (3:1, 6:1) in feet or meters, or as a percentage (2%, 30%). The gradient is a measurement of the slope height as related to its base.

Slopes or gradients are expressed as a ratio of the length of rise to the length of run; for example, 1:10 is the same as 10 per cent and 1:50 is the same as 2 per cent.

Les travaux d'exploitation sont reliés aux galeries des niveaux de base et de tête de l'étage par des galeries inclinées (plans inclinés) ou verticales (bures), de façon à réaliser l'aérage et l'évacuation de chaque chantier grâce à ses deux issues. Dans les plans inclinés, les berlines roulent sur des rails ou bien le charbon est transporté sur un convoyeur.

Inclined planes. In the 18th century, inclined planes were constructed to transport small boats on trucks between adjacent pounds, using animal power and gravity and, later, steam. A series of planes was built in the U.S. on the canal between the Delaware and Hudson rivers to transport 80-ton vessels in caissons; a similar plane for 60-ton vessels was built at Foxton, England, to bypass ten locks.
