Un élément incompatible est un élément qui, lors d'un processus de fusion, va se concentrer principalement dans la phase liquide. Lors des phénomènes de fusion partielle du manteau qui auraient donné naissance à la croûte, les éléments incompatibles se seraient concentrés dans la phase liquide, qui en se refroidissant forme la croûte continentale, laissant un manteau résiduel appauvri. C'est ce manteau résiduel qui serait échantillonné par les basaltes des rides océaniques.
