[...] le «matériau intelligent» [...] [le] matériau est défini comme présentant des fonctions intrinsèques qui lui permettent de se comporter comme un capteur et/ou un actionneur, voire comme un processeur. Il est capable de modifier spontanément ses propriétés physiques (forme, conductivité, couleur, viscoélasticité...) en réponse à des sollicitations naturelles ou provoquées (variation de température, de champ électrique ou magnétique, de contrainte...). C'est- à-dire que le matériau réagit à un stimulus détecté à l'extérieur et adapte sa réponse. Les actionneurs en particulier fournissent une action mécanique ou changent d'aspect (déformation, changement de couleur ou de transparence...) afin de signaler une modification de l'environnement et/ou de provoquer une action corrective. Ces dispositifs peuvent être réalisés dans des alliages à mémoire de forme ou dans des matériaux magnétostrictifs.
