Bank created by the United States and twenty other American countries in 1959, in order to finance regional development projects for public and private entities in Latin American countries. Today, various European countries and Japan form part of the institution.

The Inter-American Development Bank, the oldest and largest regional multilateral development institution, was established in December of 1959 to help accelerate economic and social development in Latin America and the Caribbean. The Bank was created in response to a longstanding desire on the part of the Latin American nations for a development institution that would focus on the pressing problems of the region.
