The ISSS (International Society of Soil Science), founded on 19 May 1924, is organized as a non-profit, non-governmental, scientific society. On August 26th of 1998, the International Society of Soil Science became the International Union of Soil Sciences (IUSS). The IUSS is a scientific union member of the International Council of Scientific Unions (ICSU) since 1992. The purpose of the Union is to foster all branches of soil science and its applications, to promote contacts among scientists and other persons engaged in the study and the application of soil science, to stimulate scientific research and to further the application of soil research, for the benefit of mankind.
