The Kainai (Blood) Tribe is a part of the Blackfoot Confederacy that includes the Piikani (Peigan) and the Siksika (Blackfoot), Sarcee and Gros Ventre. The Blackfoot Confederacy refer to themselves as Soyi-tapix, which means "the Prairie people.

With over 500 square miles of land, the Blood Tribe is one of the largest reserves in Canada. Made up of 26 separate entities, the Blood Tribe Chief and Council oversee land management decisions with input from their various departments.

KAINAI: literally means "Many Chiefs". The story is this; A Blackfoot entered a Kainai camp many years ago and asked for the chief. All present replied with "I am". The Blackfoot then replied; "I will call you the tribe of many chiefs."

BLOOD: Supposedly the reason the Kainai tribe were called Blood came from as far back as the first traders. These traders named the People "Blood" because of the red ocre they used on their faces and on their ceremonial objects.
