Les «ponts continentaux» favorisent la migration des organismes terrestres. C'est ainsi qu'un pont continental unissait l'Amérique et l'Europe au Néogène. Par contre, ces ponts continentaux sont un obstacle à la dispersion des organismes marins. C'est ainsi que l'isthme de Panama est une barrière infranchissable aux organismes des océans Pacifique et Atlantique, qui ne communiquent que très loin au sud.
