La loi anglaise n'étant pas codifiée, il est souvent fait mention de cas d'espèces qui ont acquis une autorité presque égale à la loi (leading cases). Aussi les recueils de jurisprudence sont-ils fort nombreux et est-il souvent difficile de savoir où retrouver l'arrêt mentionné dans un texte et désigné par des initiales et des dates.
