Another product sometimes falsely described as leather is made by compacting leather fibres with a binding agent to hold them together. Because the fibres are stuck together rather than interwoven the product lacks the flexibility and durability of real leather. Legally this material must be described as "bonded leather fibre."

Étant donné le grand nombre de produits qui, actuellement, sont susceptibles d'être utilisés à la place du cuir, il importe de distinguer : les matières de remplacement à base de textile recouvert ou non d'une enduction imperméable à l'eau, auxquelles on donne artificiellement un «grain» comparable à certains cuirs : simili-cuir, texon (fibre de cellulose), etc.; les matières plastiques souples : chlorures de polyvinyle; les matières de remplacement à base de fibres de cuir qui, dès lors, ont une apparence et des propriétés qui se rapprochent beaucoup plus de celles du cuir que les produits précédents : syndermes, corfam, clarino, cuir reconstitué, ou autres.
