With this title comes a responsibility to live up to high ethics and moral character. You must maintain high standards, or your integrity will come under fire and your days as a livestock judge will be short lived. ... Once your morals are established, the next requirement of being the judge is to have the animal-evaluation skills necessary to sort the livestock. Having real-world production agriculture experience is not essential, but is very helpful. A minimum of two years of collegiate judging team experience is highly recommended. ... Developing self confidence to be an effective evaluator requires multiple trips to the ring. There is no substitute for practice and repetition. ... Good public speaking skills and the ability to accurately describe animals are two traits that elevate a good animal evaluator to the top. A judge who can effectively describe why one animal places ahead of another will do a better job of educating the exhibitors, families and crowd.
