Le matériel d'abord veineux se divise en deux grandes catégories : le matériel métallique et le matériel plastique. Ils ont en commun une même structure : une partie endoveineuse terminée par un biseau destiné à pénétrer la peau, et une partie extraveineuse permettant le raccordement aux dispositifs d'injection (seringues, tubulures de perfusion). Ce système de raccordement est actuellement universellement normalisé «Luer», structure tronconique femelle pour le matériel veineux, mâle pour les seringues et tubulures. Une amélioration de ce système, dite Luer-Lock, consiste en un verrouillage de sécurité interdisant à l'ensemble de se désolidariser.
