Le MOV est [...] fabriqué à partir d'un matériau d'oxyde de métal - typiquement d'un oxyde de zinc - et il dissipe de l'énergie dans la structure des grains. Il devient conducteur plutôt lentement, mais peut dissiper des quantités importantes d'énergie. Les transorbs ou diodes suppresseuses de transitoire sont fabriqués dans un matériau silicium classique pour les semi-conducteurs et commutent très vite. Ils sont capables de faire face à des puissances importantes, mais seulement pour des durées assez courtes.
