Initialement définie pour le RN, elle exprimait la quantité de rayonnement émise jusqu'à désintégration totale par une source de 1 mCi. Cette quantité est la même que celle émise en 133 h par une source de 1mg (ou mCi) de Ra; le mcd (=133 mg.h) a été utilisé pour quantifier les applications de Ra.
