[In] the muscular system of ... primitive ... vertebrates ... the segmentation of the body is clearly evident: Each myotome contributes one muscle segment, or myomere. An axial skeleton being virtually absent, the short fibers of the myomeres insert on partitions of connective tissue, the myosepta, which lie between successive myomeres.
