A nonfatal form exists in Europe. It was described in Sweden in 1934 as the "nephritic epidemic", but its agent was not identified until 1980... Isolated in 1983 in Finland, the virus was named Puumala for a lake in that country.

Une forme plutôt bénigne de «fièvre hémorragique avec syndrome rénal» existe en Europe. Dès 1934, on décrivait en Suède des cas de «néphrite épidémique» [...] C'est en 1980 que l'agent fut identifié dans les poumons d'un rongeur, le campagnol roussâtre Clethrionomys glareolus. L'hantavirus fut véritablement isolé en 1983 en Finlande et baptisé du nom d'un lac de ce pays : Puumala.
