Les neurotubules sont des microtubules de 20 à 30 mm de diamètre et de longueur indéfinie. Les neurofilaments sont des microfilaments d'environ 7 à 10 mm de diamètre et de longueur indéfinie. Ces deux types d'éléments sont présents dans tout le cytoplasme du corps cellulaire [du neurone], occupant les régions laissées libres par les organites [...] Les neurofibrilles visibles en microscopie optique après imprégnation argentique correspondent vraisemblablement à des agrégats de neurofilaments et de neurotubules. Leur rôle précis est ignoré. On suppose toutefois leur intervention dans la réalisation du flux axonal.
