À partir de son évolution récente et en la comparant à celle d'autres pays du Sud, la situation nutritionnelle des jeunes enfants à Madagascar se caractérise donc par des prévalences élevées de retard de croissance restées stables de 1992 à 2003, au moins pour les enfants de 15 mois, et par une forte augmentation, d'autant plus inquiétante qu'elle est difficilement explicable, des prévalences de malnutrition aiguë.
